Marcia Boulton Allen of Laconia and Sandwich, NH and a former resident of Darien, CT passed away peacefully at the Taylor Community Home on Thursday, March 5th after a lengthily illness. Her husband, Richard Arthur Allen, predeceased Mrs. Allen. Born in Worcester, MA on October 13, 1931, she was the daughter of the Hon. Howard Carpenter Boulton and Ellen Watson Boulton. Marcia was raised in Spencer, MA and graduated from the Northfield/Mount Herman School in Northfield, MA before attending Colby Sawyer College in New London, NH. She also attended Tufts University in Medford, MA. She lived in Darien for 35 years and summered on Squam Lake, before moving to Sandwich permanently in 1991. Marcia was a long standing parishioner of St. Luke’s Episcopal Parish in Darien where she served for many years on the Altar Guild. Using her expertise in painting needlepoint canvases, as well as the actual stitching, she was the head of a group of women who designed and needlepointed all the kneelers in the Sanctuary over a period of many years. She was an owner of the needlepoint and gift shop Entre Nous in Darien where she painted needlepoint canvases for the store. Marcia was a Girl Scout leader, PTA officer and Church School teacher and committed volunteer for many organizations in Darien and Sandwich. Upon moving to NH, she joined the Over the Hill Hikers, a group of energetic 65+ year olds who hiked the 4,000-foot peaks in NH. Marcia completed the 48 high peaks on August 22, 1995 climbing Mt. Garfield. She will be remembered as an active and enthusiastic member of this group, which she dearly loved, and as a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and friend to many. Mrs. Allen is survived by her daughter Rebecca Allen Barlow and husband Steve of New Canaan, CT and their daughter Emily of New Orleans, LA; daughter Margaret W. Nelson and husband Eric of North Wales, PA and their daughters Calista of Charlotte, NC and Sarah of Arlington, VA; and daughter Louise A. Coughlan and husband David of Winchester, MA and their daughters Betsy of Statesboro, GA and Tory of Arlington, VA. Her brother, David Watson Boulton, predeceased her by eight months. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 11th at Trinity Episcopal Church in Meredith, NH at 11 AM, followed by a private burial.
