Bayard Hancock

The Rev. Bayard Hancock, of Hogback Road Campton, died peacefully on December 3, 2015 in his home, surrounded by his children. Bayard was born on March 2, 1924 in Passaic, NJ. He grew up in Nutley, NJ and graduated from Hobart College in Geneva, NY. He served in the US Army for two and a half years during World War II. He attended Berkley Divinity School in New Haven, CT, and was ordained as a deacon and then a priest in the Episcopal Church in 1952. Bayard married Phyllis Riess on March 25, 1945 in Paris, Texas. He served Episcopal parishes in Allendale, NJ; Kingston, Rl; as well as St. Mark’s, Ashland, and Church of the Holy Spirit, Plymouth. He served the Plymouth church for 30 years before retiring to Campton in 1990. Bayard was involved in many community organizations, including the Rotary Club, the Red Cross, Plymouth Area Community Closet, PAC-TV, Gardens for All, Fresh Air Fund, Matching Funds Dental Program, the Campton Area Resource Center, and the Pemi Bridge House. Bayard was especially concerned with making services available to families and individuals most in need. He is pre-deceased by his wife, Phyllis Hancock; their infant daughter, Barbara Dale; his parents, John and Margery Hancock; his brother, John “Tie” Hancock; and his sister, Eleanor Weller. He is survived by his sister, Virginia Wilson of Wellborn, Florida; his four children, Janet of Burlington, VT; Lee (Katy) of Hopkinton, NH; Paula of Campton, NH; and Carol of Fairfax, VA; eight grandchildren: Chad (Amy) Ahem, Todd (Erika) Ahern, Craig (Michelle) Ahern, Steven (Tammy) Ahern, Kim Spigner, Kathryn Spigner, Ian Hancock and Elizabeth Hancock; and seven great­ grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bayard’s memory to St. Mark’s, Ashland; Church of the Holy Spirit, Plymouth, Community Closet, Pemi Bridge House or Pemi Baker Hospice. The family is very grateful for the support of the VNA Hospice staff and for years of service by the staff of Comfort Keepers.
