Robert John (“Bob”) Holopainen, 76, of Red Hill Road, Moultonborough, passed away on November 25, 2015 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, in Lebanon, while surrounded by his loving family. His untimely passing came as the result of complications from a cerebral hemorrhage. Born in Gardner, Massachusetts on April 24, 1939, he was the son of Waino & Franciska (Handy) Holopainen. Bob’s was a life of quiet accomplishment, choosing to keep the needs of others foremost in his mind and heart. During his youth Bob attained the rank of Eagle Scout and completed his education. From there he went to work for his father’s company, Wain-Roy Corporation, as a regional travelling representative who oversaw sales and delivery of construction equipment—including the hydraulic backhoe. After several years of service to Wain-Roy, Bob turned his attentions to more local needs by serving in many capacities for L.E. Avery. His heavy equipment expertise served the many customers of L.E. Avery very well through his thirty years of service. Bob’s commercial service experience concluded with his tenure at Red Hill Auto. Bob held a great love and respect for the community in which he and his family resided. Bob came to the Lakes Region when he was sixteen years old and became a permanent resident shortly thereafter. He married the former Rita Sturgeon and they made their home in Moultonborough, NH. During this time Bob served the Town both as a Selectman as well as Chairman of the Moultonborough Planning Board. He shepherded many efforts, including developing a town master plan and subdivision regulations. One accomplishment that Bob was particularly pleased with was the creation of the Moultonborough Recreation Department, of which he was a founding member. This included the establishment of the fields at Playground Drive and hiring a full-time Recreation Director. He always wanted the children of our community to be able to enjoy themselves in a safe environment and they are now able to do so. As Bob has now gone home, he leaves behind a quiet legacy of accomplishment and his memory will be cherished by those whom he loved as well as those whose lives he touched. Bob is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Rita (Sturgeon) Holopainen, his daughters Louanne Holopainen Fullerton & Jennifer Holopainen Doig; grandchildren, Dwayne, Benjamin, Tammy and Kevin Fullerton and Kaitlin Doig; great-grandchildren, Samuel, William, and Piper Fullerton; sister, Mary-Ellen Snow Boucher; aunt, Janice Halfrey; and many cousins, nieces & nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made as a tribute in honor of Bob Holopainen on his caringbridge.org page or to the Town of Moultonborough Recreation Department.
