Flora R. Braley, 96, of Hobart Hill Rd., passed away at Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth, NH, on Sunday, February 23, 2014 after a brief illness. Born on January 27, 1918, on Sculptured Rocks Rd., in Groton, NH, she was the daughter of Alfred A. and Flora G. Remick. She was raised in Groton and at the age of three, moved to the Groton Village Store which her parents owned. She attended the one-room school house in Groton. Her father died on her 11th birthday, leaving her mother and her brother, Clarence, to run the store. She had to learn a lot about cleaning, cooking, sewing, and so forth. When she was fifteen, she loved to tell how she worked as a housekeeper and cook for a Mrs. Smith, a retired opera singer who lived next to the Union Congregational Church in Hebron. She slept upstairs in the attic. She graduated from Bristol High School where she took many business courses, which would be most beneficial later. Flora was the youngest of seven children. Her siblings all predeceased her. Her future husband, Richard N. Braley, lived in Hebron. They knew each other for many years before they were married on April 12, 1936. Richard died at age 95 on November 30, 2008. Their first child was Myrna Ann Braley. Flora was a stay-at-home Mom until a few years later when she worked in the summer at the Journey’s End resort on Newfound Lake. Their second child was Carol Jane Braley. In 1946, she started working as secretary and bookkeeper for the Superintendent of Schools in Bristol; she retired 36 years later. The Newfound Area School District gave her a testimonial dinner and named one of the school buildings, the White School, after her. During her retirement – as well as while she worked, she spent time with family and hobbies such as knitting, gardening, quilting, decorating cakes for special occasions, and making donuts for the annual Hebron Fair. In recent years she has enjoyed being a member of the Knitting Group, and the Hebron Women’s Group. Flora was a member of the Hebron Historical Society, and she was a faithful congregant of the Union Congregational Church, in Hebron, for 80 years. Flora is survived by her daughters, Myrna Prevost and husband Fernand (Ferd), of Cocnord, NH, and Carol Drake and husband Kenneth, of California, MD; grandchildren, Kira Meeken and husband David, of Loudon, NH, Lisa Sandler and husband Tim, of Fairfield, CT, Richard Prevost and wife Rachel McKamy-Prevost, Darren Prevost, of Merrimack, NH, Scott Drake and his wife Andrea, of Great Mills, MD, and Melissa (Drake) Behrens and her husband Don, of California, MD; great-grandchildren, Aaron Meeken, Max Sandler, Tess Sandler, Sophia Prevost, Temaira McKamy, Hannah Prevost, Alex Prevost, Sam Behrens, Peter Behrens, and Travis Drake. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Memorial donations may be made in Flora’s memory to the Union Congregational Church, P.O. Box 67, Hebron, NH 03241
